With the mid-Autumn Festival fast approaching, Annam is getting with moon cake fever this month, bringing a selection of these Vietnamese goodies to the general public. All meaning that you no longer have to go to Kinh Do pop-up stands or five-star hotels to get your dose of moon cake.
Mooncakes @ The New World Hotel
If you do like what’s on offer at the five-stars, then the New World is going mooncake mad with six distinctive baked skin moon cakes. Flavours include mixed nut, white lotus, black sesame, red bean, green tea and tiramisu. The cakes are being sold in linen moon cake boxes with a matching carry bag to make for a truly elegant gift, and cost VND850,000 for a box of either four or six pieces; an individual cake costs VND185,000. Orders can be placed from Aug. 21 to Sep. 27, with a discount for early birds and bulk orders.
Vegetarian Food @ Kabin
Renaissance Riverside’s Chinese restaurant, Kabin, is more than just excellent dimsum and crispy Peking Duck, as it is demonstrating this month with its vegetarian promotion. For just VND299,000++ you can get your teeth into a vegetarian buffet, all the dishes coming with a distinct Chinese flavour. Think noodles, vegetables, tofu and just about every East Asian veggie option under the sun.
The promotion runs from Aug. 14 to Sep. 12 (except for on the Sep. 2 national holiday)
Highland Mushrooms @ Reflections
Sought out by top chefs and enthusiasts the world over, and prized by high society for their subtle, delicate flavour, mushrooms have a long and interesting culinary history. In testament to this history, Reflections will be running a Highland Mushroom Menu from Aug. 17 to Aug. 23, with chef de cuisine Darren Watson showcasing a number of mushroom-inspired dishes on the a la carte menu. Expect fare such as trompette mushrooms with Nha Trang lobster; wild mushrooms and duck liver with imported beef tenderloin; and shiitake and sous vide cooked pork with Parisian potatoes and pork jus.
Oyster Night @ Saigon Café
Fridays throughout August at Sheraton Saigon’s buffet restaurant, Saigon Café, are oyster nights. Including dishes like oyster and cheese pizza, oyster congee, creamy oyster soup and oyster tempura, there will be an ice oyster bar with oysters from Canada, Australia and Nha Trang. Also on the menu will be dishes such as oyster Kilpatrick, oyster Rockefeller, oyster topped with cheese and chorizo sausage, oyster Florentine and oyster Mornay. And the best thing? This oyster orgy costs only VND1.1 million ++ including a free flow of house wine, coffee and tea.
