It doesn’t matter. Word is running a competition in search of the best selfie taken in Vietnam.
The deal is simple. You can use a wide range of photography techniques to take your photo, you can even use your camera or your smartphone — we have two entry categories. But, as the photographer, you must manually push the shutter button to take the photo.
The winner of the competition will be featured as our front cover model later in the year.
For a full set of rules and regulations, please read the information below.
Looking forward to receiving your entry!
RULES & REGULATIONS
We are looking for striking images to celebrate the power of the selfie — and how we choose to show ourselves to the world.
We are especially interested in images that showcase a wide range of photography techniques. However, as this is a ‘selfie’ competition, the photographer must manually push the shutter button on their camera body/phone. This means the use of the following could lead to disqualification:
— Remote/Cord Triggers
— Self Timers
— Tethering Software
WHO CAN ENTER
The 2014 Word Vietnam Selfie Face-Off Competition (the “Contest”) is open to ALL photographers of any age. Participants regardless of residence or citizenship are able to enter, so long as the laws of their jurisdiction allow participation.
The Contest will consist of two categories, SLR/DSLR and smart phone photos.
1) Our first category will consist of photos taken on a traditional SLR/DSLR camera.
2) Our second category will consist of photos taken with a smart phone.
Please do not include photographs of full-frontal nudity. Images of violence and/or illegal activity are also prohibited, however photos of implied nudity are allowed.
All photographs should accurately reflect the subject matter and the scene as it appeared. Photos that have been digitally altered beyond standard optimization (removal of dust, cropping, reasonable adjustments to exposure, color and contrast, etc.) may be disqualified. Multiple exposures that have been combined to produce a single ‘High Dynamic Range’ image are acceptable. Images that do not meet these requirements may or may not be judged at the judging panel’s sole discretion.
Photo captions must accompany all submissions, and should include the location the image was taken, and the name of the photographer(s).
HOW TO ENTER
You can select an image directly from your computer desktop, or submit images from Flickr, Facebook and Instagram for consideration in the contest.
ELIGIBILITY AND JUDGING
To ensure eligibility for the contest all entries must have a minimum file size of 500kb. Images that do not meet this standard will not be judged.
Entries may originate in any format — including, but not limited to digital files, digital prints, colour transparencies, colour prints, or black and white prints — so long as they are submitted electronically. Previously published material for which non-exclusive rights were granted may be entered as long as you still maintain the right to grant us a license (see “Your Rights” below). You must be able to disclose when and where the photo appeared previously to Word Vietnam upon request.
Submissions may be watermarked if desired, but the watermark should be inconspicuous enough to not interfere with the judging of the photo. A watermarked photo might not be honoured by the competition (at the judges sole discretion) if the photographer is unable or unavailable to provide a pristine, watermark-free version of the image when asked.
Images will be judged on originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact and artistic merit. The judging panel will include both Word Vietnam staff members as well as independent judges. All members of the panel will be familiar with photography and will be responsible for selecting images for various printed and online marketing materials.
All decisions made by the judges are final.
Online entries can be submitted from 12.01 am on Sep. 1, 2014. The deadline for submitting entries is 11:59 pm on Oct. 31, 2014. All times are based on standard Indochina Time.
The winners will be announced in December 2014.
The grand-prize winner will have a portrait image of themselves printed on the front cover of a forthcoming issue Word Vietnam. Other finalist images will also be featured within the magazine.
You will retain all rights to any photograph you submit — including ownership if applicable. You only grant Word Vietnam rights (as described below) to your photograph if you are honoured by the competition as an honorable mention, finalist, runner up or grand-prize winner.
If your photograph is formally honoured by the competition as an honorable mention, finalist, runner up or grand-prize winner, you grant Word Vietnam a royalty-free, nonexclusive right, in perpetuity, to:
— Use the photograph on the Internet
— Use the photograph in Word Vietnam’s non-commercial communications
— Provide your photograph to other individuals and organizations for non-commercial use, TNC-related use in news stories, newsletters, reports, slide shows, displays, web pages, and the like
— Use, in connection with the Photo Contest, your name, city, state and country of residence in promotions and other publications
— Keep the files provided, and to archive the images on CD or in other electronic forms, so that your photos can be used and be properly credited
As conditions of this permission, Word Vietnam shall credit all photographs with the caption ‘Photo by Person’s Name’ when the full name is available.
